<br />
Body percussion may be performed on its own or as an accompaniment to song. The folk traditions of many countries include the use of body percussion. <br />
<br />
<b>Body percussion sounds</b><br />
<br />
Percussion instruments produce their sound when a player hits, scrapes, rubs or shakes them to produce vibrations. These techniques can also be applied to the human body. The body also presents several unique possibilities including the use of inhaled or exhaled air and vocal sounds.<br />
<br />
Traditionally the four main body percussion sounds (in order from lowest pitch to highest in pitch) are:<br />
<br />
Stomp: Stamping the feet against the floor or a resonant surface.<br />
Patsch: patting either the left, right or both thighs with hands<br />
Clapping hands together<br />
Click/ snapping: clicking with the thumb and middle fingers<br />
<br />
However, there are numerous other possibilities including: hitting the chest, whistling, slapping or flicking the cheeks with an open mouth, clicking with the tongue against the roof of the mouth, grunting and hitting the buttocks.<br />
<br />
Variations of sound are possible through changing the playing technique. For example, clapping the hands in various positions will affect factors such as pitch and resonance.<br />
<br />
Body percussion is used extensively in music education, because of its accessibility—the human body is the original musical instrument and the only instrument that every student possesses. Using the body in this manner gives students a direct experience of musical elements, such as beat, rhythm, and metre and helps a student internalise rhythmic skills. <br />
<br />
Body percussion may be performed solo or several performers may combine to create an musical ensemble <br />

entry-level learning experience that is accessible to anyone who wants
to participate. Drum Circle participants express themselves collectively
by using a chorus of tuned drums, percussion, and vocals to create a
musical song together while having a great time.”<br />
<br />
According to Mickey Hart: “The Drum Circle is a huge jam session. The
ultimate goal is not precise rhythmic articulation or perfection of
patterned structure, but the ability to entrain and reach the state of a
group mind. It is built on cooperation in the groove, but with little
reference to any classic styles. So this is a work in constant progress,
a phenomenon of the new rhythm culture emerging here in the West.”<br />

<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
================<br />
<br />
The Community Drum Circle is the use of a rhythm-based event as a
tool for unity. It is NOT a drum class. It’s NOT using
culturally-specific rhythms. A community drum circle in the United
States is a fun, family friendly event, where people empower each other
in the act of celebrating community and life through rhythm and music.
People of all levels of musical expertise come together and share their
rhythmical spirit with what ever drums and percussion they bring to the
event. They don’t have to be a drummer to participate. Everyone has
something to offer the circle, and any one is welcome.<br />
<br />
The spirit and magic of rhythm expressed on drums and percussion
instruments cuts through all ages, sexes, religions, races and cultures.
“Rhythm”, as Gabriel Roth says, “is the mother tongue.” Rhythm is a
universal language known to every one, even the youngest child, if we
can just “remember.” So in a very objective, yet beautiful way, an
interactive rhythm event puts us all on an equal footing with each other
and brings us closer together. The facilitator serves this process by
guiding the participants to their highest musical potential.<br />
<br />
A community drum circle is created, “in the moment” by all the people
who participate. Co-operation and collaboration is the basic glue. When
we drum together, sharing our spirit in the form of rhythm, it changes
our relationships. As we play together, we give ourselves a rhythmical
massage and an emotional release. The experience is unique to each
person in the circle, and it happens whether we are entraining ourselves
into the circle by drumming, or standing outside the circle and
listening while tapping our feet and clapping along with the music.<br />
<br />
There are many places where drum circles are being used for many purposes, like….<br />
• Teambuilding for corporations<br />
• Empowerment building for mens and womens groups<br />
• Spirit building for spiritual growth and personal growth groups<br />
• Synergizing and rhythm training for school/kids groups<br />
• Stress and anger relief for kids- at-risk groups<br />
• Orientation for college campuses and on-going circles for multi-cultural awareness.<br />
• Family bonding for family night drum circles.<br />
• Community building and market building for music stores.<br />
<br />
To make beautiful music together, all we have to do is bring to the
circle whatever rhythmical expertise we have to offer, along with the
excitement of sharing it with other people. The quality of the music
produced in an event like this is not based on the rhythmical expertise
of the players, but on the quality of their relationship with the other
people in the circle. The result is those magical musical moments where
one powerful voice is created out of the many. In those moments, the
players stop worrying about keeping time because time, as they know it,
has stopped. In it’s place is a living breathing entity, expressing
timeless joy, passion and release through the power of rhythm. That is
the beauty of a community drum circle.<br />

===============<br />
What is a Drum Circle Facilitator?<br />
By Christine Stevens & Arthur Hull<br />
from the <a href="http://www.remo.com/portal/pages/drum_circles/defined/Drum+Circles+Defined+Drum+Circle+Facilitator.html" target="_blank" title="remo site">Remo-site</a><br />
“The facilitator’s role is to orchestrate a mixed group of people
into a fully functioning and exciting improvisational percussion
ensemble.”<br />
–Arthur Hull<br />
<br />
The term “facilitation” literally means “to make easy.” A
facilitator’s main job is demonstrating rhythmic-EASE and empowering a
group of people to experience the benefits of being in community and
making music.<br />
<br />
It’s like the Wizard of Oz. People travel to the drum circle
expecting that the facilitator can magically bestow them with rhythm and
talent. What they don’t always know or believe is that the rhythm is
already within them. The group sometimes needs to believe there is a
wizard in order to believe in themselves. They then begin their journey
into the land of rhythmic expression. The facilitator’s job is to sense
when leadership is needed and when to back off and get out of the way.
The ultimate goal is to have the circle facilitate itself.<br />
In today’s postmodern world, it’s no surprise that an entire
profession is emerging of people facilitating drum circles for multiple
purposes. These people come from very different backgrounds, such as
business, massage, social work, music therapy, music education,
musicians, computer programmers, and more. Most facilitators are either
self-taught or they have attended a facilitation training workshop.<br />
<br />
The facilitator understands the role of service and the
non-performance aspect of the drum circle. They are not there to show
off their personal playing talents. They are there to support the
group’s experience creating an improvised song.<br />
<br />
The facilitator has a unique combination of skills:<br />
• Good musical sense and rhythmical playing ability.<br />
• Good sense of group building skills.<br />
• Good spiritual and personal development.<br />
<br />
Successful facilitators utilize these skills in achieving the
dual-purpose of the drum circle: developing the music and developing the
sense of community<br />
<br />

<br />
<u><b>What is a facilitated community drum circle? </b></u><br />
A facilitated community drum circle is a fun, family-friendly rhythm
event. Participants express themselves by playing on a chorus of tuned
drums and hand percussion. They create a musical song together, while
being guided by a rhythm event facilitator. These community drumcircles
are accessible to all ages and all levels of rhythmical expertise,
including beginners.<br />
At community drumcircles, participants make
in-the-moment music, expressing their collective rhythmical spirit. A
community drumcircle is NOT a drum class.<br />
When a community comes
together to drum they unite in rhythm and harmony to celebrate life.
Their interactions create a supportive, interdependent relationship. In a
community drumcircle, we value each person for his or her unique
contribution to the group song.<br />
The facilitator is a guide, whose
intention is to create community through group rhythmical empowerment.
They are there to help facilitate the groups collaborative musical
effort.<br />
<br />
<u><b>Why do people drum? </b></u><br />
People go to drum circles because they have discovered that rhythmical
expression is an important aspect that has been missing from their
lives. Drumming awakens them to self-discovery and helps them to see the
world with the eyes of a child. Drumming affects each person
differently, stimulating creative expression, as the explore, experience
and express the rhythms of their lives. Although people drum for
musical expression, to reduce stress and to create community, most
people come to community drum circles for the pure fun of it.<br />
<br />
<u><b>Which people drum? </b></u><br />
All kinds of people drum. Children in schools, well elderly, corporate
executives and health care practitioners drum. Physically challenged
men and women, people in prison, and kids at risk drum. Men, woman and
children of all ages participate in rhythm based events.<br />
Men's
groups and woman's groups each use drum for ritual bonding and
empowerment for their genders. Spiritual groups use drums as part of
their worship <br />

Nice video about the drum circle at
Meridian Hill Park in Washington, DC.<br />
<br />
People with musical instruments come ready to play. Strangers get up
to dance. Crowds gather around. You can find them each Sunday at
Meridian Hill Park in Washington, DC. For years, Willy Posey has been
part of the Meridian Hill Park drum circle.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
WILLY POSEY: "A few
guys gathered together and they just started the circle. And it just
grows, grows, grows more and more over the years."<br />
Abdel Elgizouzi has been coming to the drum circle since moving to Washington from Sudan.<br />
ABDEL
ELGIZOUZI: "Twelve years ago, there are a group of about 10, 15 black
old male playing. Now you see, there is almost 150 drummers."<br />
Today,
the nationalities and ethnicities of the Meridian Hill Park drummers
are as different as the instruments and the beats they play. Kevin
Lambert was the first white person to play at the circle.<br />
KEVIN
LAMBERT: "Several people stopped the drumming when I would show up and
say, 'You can't play with this white boy.' And this went on for a while.
And the leader of this finally said, 'You cannot pull any racism in
this. This is about music. This is not about black or white. This man
can play. He stays.' And as soon as he said that, everyone shut up and
it was over."<br />
More newcomers arrive each week.<br />
ADBEL
ALGIZOUZI: "It is not only now black. It is black, Chinese, Hispanic,
white, everywhere. And everybody come with a drum from his country, from
his region, from his people."<br />
Music lovers are always welcome.<br />
KEVIN
LAMBERT: "This sort of morphing together. The African rhythms, the
project beats and the Cuban rhythms, the salsa rhythms."<br />
The beats become one as different people interact.<br />
ABDEL ELGIZOUZI: "And that is the bottom line of this circle."<br />
WILLY POSEY: "Just come on in here and just join in with us in the spirit, and we can just keep growing."<br />

You can read the whole article over <a href="http://www.ubdrumcircles.com/article_pharmacies.html" target="_blank">here</a><br />
<br />
Some nice parts<br />
<br />
====<br />
A pharmacy exists in my mind, where drums are shelved next to St. John’s
Wart as a homeopathic mood-enhancer. Where a directory of rhythmic health facilitators
sits on the counter where you pick up your prescriptions. Where a pharmacist
hands customers an information page listing local drum circles in their community.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
====<br />
The drum plays a unique and key role in enabling people to experience the health
benefits of recreational music making. There is a reason why drumming has been
an ancient tool of community health in cultures from Africa, Egypt, Brazil and
Cuba. In the Native American culture of the United States, the drum plays a
significant role in spiritual practice, ceremony and ritual. In modern day language,
these key aspects of group drumming that serve both personal and community health
and wellness are as follows; <br />
<ul>
<li><i>Drumming is accessible</i> – the drum is a user-friendly instrument
that everyone can play. </li>
<li><i>Drumming is immediate</i> - it offers a unique learning curve, with
fast results. </li>
<li><i>Drumming is inclusive</i> – it creates a common ground for the
most novice player and expert alike, the young and old, disabled and able-bodied.
</li>
<li><i>Drumming allows self-expression</i> – it is a medium of non-verbal
creativity. </li>
<li><i>Drumming allows communication </i>– across cultures, ages, and
disabilities. </li>
<li><i>Drumming releases stress </i>– its unique aesthetic enjoyment
creates a palette for physical and emotional release. </li>
<li><i>Drumming is a social elixir</i> – it brings people together for
an amazing experience in inspiration and connection. </li>
</ul>
====<br />
The use of world percussion instruments seems to be a key. Playing with our
hands or a single mallet makes drumming most accessible. And still, the crucial
element seems to be the focus on fun, self-expression, support, and connection.
These are much more important than whether people can read a sheet of music,
play a paradiddle or count out different metric signs. In fact, without any
knowledge of specific rhythms, I have seen many music therapy clients play amazing
rhythms.<br />

<br />
It's a combination of movement, steps, clapping and voice. It's not my cup of thea, while I practice Yoga and rhythm, but it's becoming more and more popular, so here are some youtube video's. <br />

The TaKeTiNa Rhythm Process, developed by Austrian percussionist Reinhard Flatischler, is a musical, meditative group process for people who want to develop their awareness of rhythm. In a TaKeTiNa process, there are three different rhythmic layers—represented by the voice, claps, and steps—that continue simultaneously. Vocalization and clap rhythms, accompanied by the berimbau, constantly change while the steps, supported by a surdo drum, remain the same. The surdo stabilizes the basic rhythm of the steps, while call-and-response singing serves to destabilize and re-stabilize the rhythmic movements. In this process, the simultaneity of stabilization and destabilization creates a disturbance that allows participants to repeatedly fall out, and then fall back into rhythm. Participants are guided into the experience of rhythm archetypes, rhythmic images anchored deep in human consciousness. According to Flatischler, the support of the group allows the individual participant to go into his or her own process, building deep musical and personal trust.<br />
TaKeTiNa is used in academic and clinical settings and in corporate trainings worldwide.<br />

I ruined at least a hundred feet of bamboo experimenting with various jigsaw cuts to produce sound. And now 13 years later am still messing with it. Some are open ended. Others are closed at both ends. There is a definite correlation between length, wall thickness and inner diameter of the bamboo tube.<br />

According to the Bamana people in Mali, the name of the djembe comes from the saying "Anke djé, anke bé" which translates to "everyone gather together in peace" and defines the drum's purpose. <div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
In Lucumí public ritual performances, known as toques de santo, song and
dance can be supported by one of a variety of percussion ensembles. The
most prestigious of these consists of the three double-headed, hourglass
shaped drums known as batá. The batá are consecrated drums that are
regarded as manifestations of the orisha Aña and can only be handled and
performed by initiates of the Aña cult. (Many of the musical and ritual
features of the Aña batá are discussed in the following section.)
Though toques de batá with consecrated drums are deemed to be the most
efficacious of all the public music rituals, there are a variety of
other types of ensembles that might be employed instead. </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Aberikulá
are non-consecrated batá drums. Practitioners often hire an aberikula
ensemble to save on costs. Aberikulá also signify lowered ritual
expectations. Unlike Aña batá, there is no elaborate pre-ceremonial meal
for the musicians or animal sacrifice for the drums.</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Aberikulá
are also used when Aña batá are not available, as is often the case in
rural Cuba, the United States, Mexico, Europe, and other places where
the Lucumí religion has spread. Even when Aña batá are present in these
areas, aberikulá are often used due to a lack of Aña initiates. </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Finally,
some orthodox practitioners believe that Aña batá should only be played
during daylight hours and will hire an aberikulá ensemble for evening
rituals. Whereas Aña batá are constructed from hollowed logs of a single
tree and tensioned with either leather straps or rope, aberikulá can be
made from a wider variety of materials (including strips of wood,
banded together like a barrel, or even fiberglass) and are often
tensioned with steel lugs, much like a conga drum. Sometimes, however,
they are built to look exactly like Aña batá</div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><b><u>Wij tegenover Ik </u></b></span><br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>Muzikale technieken</b></u></span> <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
2. Vind een grote verscheidenheid van verschillende klankkleuren. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
3 Gebruik dynamiek. <br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>Veelgemaakt beginners-fouten </b></u></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
De angst voor fouten. <br />
<br />
<br />
Niet luisteren naar elkaar. <br />
<br />
<br />
Overspelen. <br />
